He said the debates have not allowed substantive debate on the issues. “It’s like tag wrestling,” he added.
He said the primary problem with the economy is the ‘tremendous waste” in it. One example he cited is the defense budget “with $200 billion being spent beyond what is needed.”
He cited inefficient cars that waste fuel and cited advertising. “We waste $30 billion on advertising that serves no useful purpose and is positively harmful, selling cigarettes, liquor, junk food and cosmetics. We should let them work somewhere else, doing something useful. Think if all the advertising people were teaching children.”
He said about $1 trillion of the gross national product is wasteful. “That would be fine if we didn’t have all these problems,” he said. “The Japanese are right when they say we’re self-indulgent, but they encourage it.”
He noted that early in the century Henry Ford decided to give his workers two days off each week “so they’d have time to drive their cars on the weekends. What if we tell the Japanese, ‘We’ll put a duty on your products if you don’t give your people a five-day week?’ ”
He noted that about one percent of the people have received 77 percent of the increased wealth from the ’80s. “If we start getting some exposure, we can still raise these issues for public attention,” he said.
In the next month he expects to be on the ballot in New York, Minnesota, Wisconsin and possibly Nebraska “now that Kerry is out.” He is not sure yet if he will be on the ballot in California.
He noted that not only has he been excluded from the debates so far, he has not been on the Sunday news shows. “I’ve got the policy involvement. I’ve got economic proposals that apply to 1992, not 1972 or 1976. If I weren’t running, they’d probably have me in as an expert commentator. I’m just as expert now.”
