becoming famous because of their talent and hard work. After all, this paper has many times praised the independent spirit and volunteerism as respectable qualities, but what about this subject? Is it the exception?

every week'
To the Editor:
I just finished reading the newsletter that the Rappahannock Animal Welfare League sends me every month because I always send them a pledge. A part of this newsletter, was quite disturbing. I find it extremely hard to believe that your newspaper does not, or will not, print the picture of the league’s “petof-the-week” consistently . . . meaning each and every week.
I have to admit that I was shocked to learn of this. I guess I was naive to the fact that maybe» there are some people out there that do not care if an animal lives or dies.' Well, I know hundreds that do. Most; of them live in this county. Can’t you • see how important this picture may! be? It could mean the difference be-.' tween life or death to a dog or cat. The shelter has placed many of the “pets-of-the-week” simply because < someone saw their picture and fell in’ love with them instantly. The simple; fact that your paper has saved many ’ animals that were doomed should be « reason enough to make certain that! every week there is a picture. (Who! really cares if Mrs. Jones was visited; by Mrs. Smith on Sunday afternoon?’ I know I don’t. Leave that useless! news out and put in something that! will help.)
I know that the next time I pick up the Rappahannock News in the store to buy, I will first see if there is a face of a loving animal in it. If not, it will never get into my living room. All of my friends of the community are doing the same. We all have pets. I have many. All of the dogs I have came from a shelter. They have proved to be my saviors at times. Sometimes only something that loves you unconditionally can comfort you when you really need it. Animals seem to be the only ones of God’s creations that do.
I really hope that you can see why this little gesture on your part can be so important. Sometimes it is the little things that can make such a big difference.
