In celebration of Mardi Gras, Wakefield School in Marshall hosted a celebration this week replete with a parade, floats, costumes, games, and a gala international dinner. Mardi gras, which comes from the French Fat Tuesday, refers to the day before Lent begins.
The Wakefield students thought it would be a good opportunity for a party and a chance to showcase their linguistic talents. The evening was given an international flavor when students of Spanish and German joined in the preparations.
Festivities began as students donned costumes and witnessed the crowning of the king and queen. Elected queen by a vote of the students was Cara Speziale of Front Royal. King for the day was Van DeBergh of Washington, Va. Upper school students then provided games with an international flair for the younger students; from boules (bowling in the French fashion) and a ring toss with German and Spanish candy treats for prizes to name just two.
The program began with the parade of floats designed and constructed by students in grades one to seven.
Then all the foreign language students presented a variety of skits, poems, songs, and musical productions. Michelle Egan and Trevor Herndon of Warrenton, Celine Senseney of Charles Town, W.Va. and Tom Wadlow of The Plains presented a wonderful version of “The Three Little Pigs” in Spanish.
