Josie Menefee

Mrs. Josie Mae Menefee, 91, of Flint Hill, formerly of Sperryville, died Wednesday, Sept. 23 at her residence.

A native of Sperryville, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Mary Atkins Pullen and the widow of Floyd William Menefee.

She is survived by five sons, Cleveland Menefee hnd Richard Menefee, both of Sperryville, Earl S. Menefee of Warrenton, James William Menefee of Flint Hill and Roger Menefee of Washington; four daughters, Oakey Lambert and Ann Layton, both of Charlottesville, Margaret Fincham of Front Royal and Bertie Pullen of Flint Hill; 20 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Sept. 26 at Geest-Johnson Funeral Home in Culpeper with the Rev. Jimmy Burke officiating. Interment was in Sperryville Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Buddy Brown, Roger Rutherford, Roy Thomas, John R. Eubank Jr., Jimmy Steward, Greg Smoot, William Southard and Tommy Jenkins.

Rev. U.S. Brokenburr

Rev. Ulysses S. Brokenburr, 86, of Washington, D.C., died Thursday, Sept. 17 at the Washington Hospital Center.

Rev. Brokenburr was bom Feb. 28, 1906 in Hampton, the son of the late Benjamin and Mary Elizabeth Baker Brokenburr.

He attended public schools in Hampton before relocating to Washington, D.C. He attended Armstrong High School in D.C. and also Howard University School of Religion and Northwestern College.

Rev. Brokenburr has pastored three churches, Shiloh Baptist Church in Woodville, First Baptist Church in Washington and for the past 37 years Hopewell Baptist Church in Sperryville.

Survivors include his wife, Minnie B. Brokenburr; one sister, Lucy Holland of Hampton and seven godchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 22 at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in D.C. with Rev. John Pendleton officiating.
