Education is

the answer

To the Editor: 1 think the cure to the pregnancy problem is parents and teachers working together to inform our young teenagers about sex. They need a place to turn to get their questions answered truthfully. The teachers and counselors can’t answer these questions at school. All the parents who are interested in starting a program at the High School call the School Board Office and get a class started or write a brief letter.

Unjustifiable

rate increase

To the Editor:

As a member of Rappahannock Electric Cooperative, I would like to express my sincere concern over our present service and the proposed 7 percent rate increase to be instated in the month of October.

For many years now, people serviced by the “Rixley” substation have suffered from numerous and often lengthy power outages. This summer our service has been extremely poor. We have had power outages with almost every storm. These outages are as follows: July 27, 2 hours; July 31, 10 1/2 hours; Aug. 4,21/2 hours; Aug. 22,5 hours, Sept. 10,4 1/2 hours.

This pattern has existed for many years. I so understand that Mother Nature will take her course; however the lines in our community are overgrown and poorly kept in many areas.

In a recent article published by Francis Updike, we learned of many disturbing facts about how our money is being spent. For two years now, Rappahannock Electric Cooperative members have received no patronage refunds. There is no ob,vious action on Rappahannock Electric’s part to save money in these hard economic times.

They now propose another 7 percent rate increase. At present we pay 30 percent in excess of our neighbors serviced by Potomac Edison, and for a much less effective system.

I have had several meetings with Mr. Frank Andrews, Culpeper district manager, and he agrees that the complaints that I and neighbors have voiced are legitimate and that they “are working on it.” However; no obvious actions have been taken.
