many are forgetting that our President did and does have an economic program, not flashy or immediate, but solid and lasting. What has happened to it? The Democrat-controlled Congress, in its frantic effort to regain control of the White House, seems to have resorted to every trick in the book, many times with the support of a far-left press, blocking any of his proposals.
Such Capital Hill thinking as this is what caused me, an old Byrd Democrat, to follow many other Southerners in joining the other party as an independent moderate Republican where we have felt the real leadership is. Why this shift? Because the Democrat party was captured in the early 70s by the radical left and far-out liberals. I was active in Washington during those years and witnesses with horrors what was happening to the traditional party of my ancestors.
Our President does have a realistic program for carefully, but surely working our way out of the financial doldrums. To do so, we voters must demand that the members of Congress (maybe as many as 200 new ones coming in) give our President the support he should receive as our elected leader.
Even though we did win over the communist threat, the entire world in which we must live and function remains everywhere like a powder keg ready to explode at any moment. We urgently need an experienced, trustworthy and steady hand at the helm of our country’s ship of state as we sail through the perilous waters of our future. President Bush is that trustworthy leader. He is known and respected throughout all of our shrinking and agitated world. The free people of that world are looking to this country, whether or not we like it, for the leadership in foreign affairs that both President Reagan and President Bush have demonstrated.

On behalf of the Rappahannock Animal Welfare League, I want to thank the Rappahannock community for supporting our recent fundraising endeavor at the White Elephant in Warrenton. The results far surpassed our expectations. Many local citizens contributed items to be sold, and the Rappahannock News helped us spread the word about the project to benefit animal welfare. To all who helped, many, many thanks.
