The plays incorporate storytelling, acting and music, which, said Ms. Portman, would be viewed by regular theater people as rather unconventional. “These plays have their own unusual nature,” she said.
Ms. Portman, whose father was a professional musician and whose mother was a pianist and organist, grew up surrounded by music. “I had an unusual family,” said Ms. Portman. “These plays could almost write themselves.”
“Katie Malone” was performed in Africa when Ms. Portman and her husband Paul Reisler toured there earlier this summer. The play, which focuses the life of pure Irish Katie Malone, was enormously popular and well received. “I was startled by its popularity over there,” she said. “Apparently the audience, although of a different culture, was able to share the common human experience of this play.”
