Buck Cline, with the state Department of Forestry, presented a slide show on forest management. He said the state is promoting a forest stewardship program to encourage owners of private forests to promote multiple uses of the woods.
Mr. Cline said in the past his department has been concerned primarily with maximizing the production of forest products. He said owners are now being encouraged to manage forests for other purposes such as protecting wildlife, protecting wetlands, and recreation. He said only one Rappahannock landowner has become involved in the stewardship program so far, but he encouraged more to take part.
Helen Smith described the study of county water supplies undertaken by the extension service. She said the main problems the study found were manganese, corrosiveness and bacteria in water supplies. She said most of the participants with problems in their water supplies had taken or plan to take some corrective action as a result of the study.
