Maybe the crowd wasn’t eating, but expenses managed to gobble up much of the fire department’s profit. The main costs went to pay the performers and for food and supplies.
"The fire department will take home far less than 50 percent of the gross.” said spokesperson Ellen Manson. “We’ll net only about $4,000 or $5,000,” she added.
Despite this, the chief was not entirely disappointed with the day. “The Town of Washington paid for the fireworks, which were outstanding. We raised some money, and everybody seemed to be having fun. That’s the important thing,” said Roach.
“And we did a lot better than some years when we were rained out completely,” he added.
