A “high” level of ozone pollution was recorded in Shenandoah National Park June 18-20 at two of three monitoring stations in the Park, officials announced today. Over 80 parts per billion (ppb) of ozone pollution levels were recorded in the Park’s air quality monitoring station at Sawmill Run all three day, said Superintendent Bill Wade. The Big Meadows station recorded high ozone pollution on June 18 and 19.

“Visitors who suspect they are experiencing ozone-induced symptoms while hiking should rest more frequently or go indoors,” said Julie Thomas, Shenandoah’s air quality program manager. According to the American Lung Association, ozone levels above 80 ppb can cause headaches, chest pains, weakness, and labored breathing in sensitive individuals.

Ozone pollution is formed from the reaction of nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds and sunlight. It generally takes several hot, humid, stagnant days in a row’ for ozone pollution to build up to high levels.
