The freedom to vote and choose our leaders carries a dual responsibility: to vote carefully and intelligently and to accept the results of such voting. When peoples have not accepted the responsibilibies of democracy, they have not been able to keep the benefits of democracy.

We have seen people who, because they themselves are sure they know God’s will, feel no compunction about denying others the freedom to worship God differently. We have seen people who, because they are offended by what others write about themselves or their politics, censor the free expression of ideas. We have seen peoples who, because they have lost an election, pick up the gun and attempt to invalidate the results of that election.

Because in the past we have accepted the responsibilities of democracy, we now enjoy its freedoms. If we continue to accept these responsibilities, we shall also continue to enjoy these freedoms. If wre communicate nothing else about democracy to those nations now trying to learn how democracy works, we should communicate this: those who would choose the benefits of democracy
