pro-choice Supreme Court justice and in a state where even a mild parental notification law keeps failing to pass, there seems little danger of any Virginia woman losing her right to an abortion.
Not only that, but the intervening years between Wilder's victory and this election have brought hard economic times to the stte and the threat of even harder times with military cutbacks and Wilder’s recent revelation thatey huge budget shortfall looms. Economic issues therefore rise to the top of the pile, and it is members of Ms. Terry’s party who’ve been in charge of state government since 1982.
It is fair to say that Doug Wilder has been one of the most fiscally conservative chief executives in state history, one the late U.S. Sen. Harry' Byrd Sr. could certainly laud for his willingness to bite the bullet. Yet the governor’s various Public Relations miscues ranging from running for president to his relationship with Mrs. Patricia Kluge to use of state helicopters and planes, plus his constant savaging of Robb and certain other prominent Democrats, have eroded his public support and he will be able to provide little spillover coattail effect for Ms. Terry even if he wanted to — and it is not at all certain he does.
