struggles ior tne freedom or the many over the privileges of the few.
As Jefferson himself said, “Men...are naturally divided into two parties: 1. those who fear and distrust the people, and wish to draw all powers from them into the hands of the higher classes, and 2. those who identify themselves with the people, have confidence in them, cherish and consider them as the most honest and safe, although not the most wise, depository of public interests.”
A better declaration of what it means to be a Democrat I have not heard. The history of the time tells us of how fragile our democracy was then, but Thomas Jefferson prevailed. In 1800 he was elected president, becoming the second Virginian to hold that office.
We have succeeded in making democracy work. We have shown the world that the common man can and should govern himself, and in so doing we changed the world. Thomas Jefferson, wrote in 1821, “The flames kindled on the 4th of July, 1776, have spread over too much of the globe to be extinguished by the feeble engines of despotism.”
