The unemployment rate for Rappahannock and surrounding counties edged up slightly in May under pressure from college students entering the labor market, according to figures released last week by the Virginia Employment Commission.
Rappahannock’s jobless rate rose to 5.3 percent in June, compared to a low of 5.4 percent the month before, but well below the 8.7 percent from the same period last year.
Throughout the five counties in Planning District 9, May’s jobless rate was 4.5 percent, which is significantly lower than the 1992 rate for the same month of 7.2 percent.
Statewide the unemployment rate is 5.1 percent this May, versus 6.4 percent the year before. In the nation, the figures were 6.7 percent for May, compared to 7,2 percent in May last year.
