Back to School

While hot weather may linger, Tuesday marks the end of Summer and the beginning of fall for many families with the ‘beginning of school.

The addition at the elementary school won’t be ready for students for several months, but progress is visible every day. This week the highway department has been working on improving the road that leads to the back of the addition.

New teachers will have spent two weeks in preparation •for the return of students, and the county’s returning faculty ;will have spent one week. On the whole they are as excited Sand nervous about the start of another school year as the ■students. : This year marks a departure from the usual back to School costs. Textbooks, for the most part, will be furnished •free. Parents and other taxpayers will ultimately bear the jcost of this in increased taxes, but for families it will be quite Sa relief from the usual expense of preparing for the return of {the school year. ; At the high school a group of parents and teachers has i 2>een working on finding ways to improve the academic •programs. The grading system has been modified, and a Volunteer organization REAP is being organized. We hope IRE AP will be successful. The group is looking for volunteers, parents and other community members, to help in a variety of jways. The first meeting will be 8 p.m. TTiursday. I We would like to suggest to this committee that it also •explore the possibility of offering the International baccalaureate program and diploma to graduating seniors. IThis very demanding curriculum will be what top colleges {increasingly will be looking for in their entering freshman glasses. I Motorists need to again be aware of the yellow buses {traveling our roads. Be aware also that in the morning any jdriveway may hide children preparing to board the bus. We have had too many incidents of cars passing stopped school •buses. It’s illegal; it’s also very dangerous. However, on the ^our-lane road, a bus stopped in the other direction does not Irequire that cars stop. I Students and coaches have been working very hard to I prepare for the start of the fall sports season. They deserve [the support of the community. 'Hie first girls’ basketball •games will be Tuesday night, following the first day of school. iThe greatly expanded cross country team will host its first •meet on the course behind the Bleu Rock Inn Wednesday •September 21. I This is the only public school system we have, folks. | While we reserve the right to criticise when we believe it is jneeded, we are also committed to supporting the system in its .'own goal of continuous improvement.
