She decided it would make better sense to live and work here. “I feel smaller community schools provide more opportunities for meaningful educational experiences,” she said. “I’ve been impressed with the warm reception we’ve gotten. The administrators and everybody welcomed us.”
Elizabeth “Liz” Hollie will be teaching ninth and eleventh-grade English. She grew up in Richmond and Baltimore County Maryland and got her undergraduate degree from Widener University in Chester Pennsylvania. She has a masters degree in education from Virginia Tech and has been working at the Radford Army Amunition Plant as a technical writer. This will be her first year teaching.
“I wanted my teaching career to be in a small school setting,” she said. “You can accomplish more, get closer to the students and relate to them better.” She said the quality training she received last week “is important.” She said she was involved with quality training at Radford. “In education it’s a move that has to be made to guarantee good education for our students,” she said. She agreed that the school system has been very welcoming.
The school system has been unable to hire a second speech therapist. Assistant Superintendent Robert Chappell said instead the school system would advertise for a speech therapy assistant to work under the direction of a licensed speech language therapist.
