system as part of her work With the Community Services Board. “I like their interactions with children and their philosophy of dealing with children,” she said. She will be working with students and parents with specific difficulties and doing social assessments as part of special education.

At the high school there are two new physical education teachers and two new English teachers. Laura Conklin has been on the job longest. She started doing behind-the-wheel drivers’ education earlier this month and has been working with the girls’ varsity basketball team for two weeks. She will teach one section of eighth grade and all the 10th grade physical education as well as drivers’ education. She has a degree from Bridgewater College.

Eugene Baltimore will teach eighth and ninth grade physical education. He grew up in Manassas Park and graduated from Shenandoah University. Last year he taught part time at Metz Middle School. “I’m looking forward to this year,” he said. “We’ll try, to improve the school as best we can.”

He and Miss Conklin say they will put more emphasis on physical fitness and take more time to prepare students for the President’s Tests of Physical Fitness. Miss Conklin said she is concerned with the lack of upper body strength in the girls that shows up on part results of physical fitness tests and wants to work on that.

Both say they intend to emphasize basic skills.

Cindy Cumins will teach 10th grade English, creative writing and drama. She graduated from Rappahannock County High School in 1976 and then graduated from Longwood College. She taught in Albemarle County for 13 years but says she is looking forward to teaching in her home county.
