see the need for the ban on antique shops, especially if they were in exsiting farm outbuildings. “There’s not going to be that heavy a volume of traffic," he said. “Take a farmer’s wife and she has that interest. Do we really want to tell her she can’t do this as a way to get a little extra income because Mike doesn’t give her enough allowance?” He admitted his scenario was “pretty far-fatched.”
He said he did not believe many people could make money with an antique business and they could not break even if they had to rent space in a village. «■
Mr. Estes agreed the antique business is not very profitable. He said most people would be better off “putting their money in CDs.”
Col. Bingham said, “My concern is are we really inhibiting the opportunity for somebody to make a few dollars?”
Mr. Estes said, “There’s nothing to prevent them from having a yard sale a couple of times a year.” They could also put their antiques in shops on consignment, he said.
Mr. Gilkey said, “The problem I have is that an antique shop and a gift shop are two different things. I have to go along with the recommendation of the Planning Commission.”
Mr. Anderson said, “1 don’t see any reason to restrict something that’s not causing any problem in the county right now .”
The issue of the proposed amendment on post offices was confused by the fact that the postal service is apparently currently negotiating for a new location for the Amissville Post Office.
Several years ago the county received several applications for new Amissville post office locations. Two were approved and two were denied. Members of the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors indicated they would prefer a location on the south side of U.S. 211 on or near Route 642. One
