Jeff MacNeily’s exhibition at the Middle Street Gallery astonishes the viewer in several ways. The first is its variety, from a pair of cast bronze boots to an imaginative portrait drawing of what seems to be an Indian woman whom he calls “Brushy Creek.”
Five pieces of sculpture made of barbed wire are all expressive, some humorous, one derisive and one, the horse “Alchemist,” an affectionate appreciation of the beautiful lines of a particular animal he knows. This latter piece, emphasizing the curved volumes and forms of a horse, illustrates the irrelevance of what an artist uses
