VDOT work continues on Route 625 where all the culverts have been replaced, some new ones have been installed and the road is beirig rebuilt higher than it was before.
At another place along Harris Hollow the top concrete deck of a low water bridge can be seen where it washed down the river. The deck will be replaced, Mr. McCarthy said.
He said the work being contracted out by the NRCS is being done under the Emergency Watershed Protection Program, and that only allows projects to eliminate imminent hazards to life or property. He said if the river bed had been raised over the past 30 years by other, less severe floods three feet, and the most recent floods raised it another two feet, the projects can only remove the last two feet even if that makes future floods more likely than they would be if five feet were removed. Part of the problem is that officials from NRCS do not really know what is from the last flood and what is from earlier ones, he said. '
