of the approved locations was across U.S. 211 at the More gasoline station. The other was on the south side of U.S. 211 on property that adjoins the mobile home park.
The postal service did not follow through with plans for either property and this summer again requested applicants to house the post office. This time they received two proposals. One Mr. McCarthy said was in an ideal location on Route 642, but it was more expensive, and the Postal Service has to take the lower bid. The other is on the North side of U.S. 211 at the intersection with Route 645, across Route 645 from a location previously turned down by the county.
That property is zoned rural residential, which allows one house per five acres and does not currently allow post offices.
Ron Frazier, who is challenging Col. Bingham for the Jackson District seat on the Board of Supervisors, said if the board approved the zoning amendment Amissville would lose its post office^ He said the people of the area would be satisfied with any location between Early’s Carpets and the Lombardy Restaurant on either side of the highway.
Mr. McCarthy said the proposed action would have no effect on an application for the post office that is expected because the property in question is not zoned agricultural.
However, the supervisors postponed acting on that amendment and instead voted to advertise another amendment that would ban post offices in agricultural zones but allow them with a special use permit in residential zones.
Mr. Massie said the planners felt strongly post offices should be in the towns.
