Hearing Case

The Board of Zoning Appeals agreed to postpone hearing a request for a variance from setback requirements until a February meeting.
At last Wednesday’s meeting, chairman pro-tern Jennifer Matthews noted that there were only three mem- y, bers present, and all three would have to agree to the variance for it to pass. State law requires that. She informed the applicant, Lynn Sullivan, that she might have a better chance of having her application approved if the two other members were present, since the requirement would still be three votes in favor.
Present for the meeting were Sid Gottlieb, Louis G. “Butch” Zindel, and Mrs. Matthews. Alex Sharp missed the meeting because of a family medical problem, and Martin Woodward was absent on business.
Ms. Sullivan seemed reluctant to request the delay arguing that her case seemed routine. The three present said they did not feel it was routine. A new hearing on the variance has been scheduled for Feb. 21.
Ms. Sullivan said her job is in New York. She said she lives in Rappahannock but is rarely here. William F. “Yogi” Bear Jr. and his wife Karen had come to the meet. ing to oppose the variance. They live in Chicago but kept their house here when United Airlines moved him to Chicago.
Ms. Sullivan was requesting a variance because she has built a deck and stairs on to her house which infringe on the required setback.
The neighboring Bears maintain that her house was already in violation of setback requirements and the situation should not be made worse.
At the Feb. 21 meeting the board will also elect officers and approve a budget.
