There will be a VDOT meeting concerning the Sperryville Bypass Study on Monday, February 12 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Rappahannock County High School auditorium.
I want to encourage every citizen to participate and voice their opinions on the bypass. My wife spoke with Bob Moore, the VDOT resident engineer, who stated that if citizens come to the meeting and strongly oppose a Sperryville bypass, VDOT could drop plans for the bypass study altogether. You may bring written statements, have your voice recorded at the meeting, or you may write your views on forms provided by VDOT.
I am against the Sperryville bypass. The motivation for this project has not come from any needs within the county but from the outside. Futuristic planners want our county as a corridor for through truck traffic. The bypass would allow through truck traffic to maintain higher speeds.
Much of Virginia has already been spoiled by the lust for larger highways with higher speeds that bypass Virginia’s heritage. For me this has made driving these highways tedious and uninteresting. Rappahannock County is different. The small roads wind through the farmland dotted with small stores and historic homes. This is why I live in this county.
A bypass of Sperryville would put the county on the road to ruin. We would create another anonymous road going through spoiled countryside. A bypass would also greatly impact the merchants of Sperryville. Visitors, unfamiliar with the roads may avoid getting off the main road for fear of becoming lost. Those who did want to stop would be inconvenienced by having to get off the main road which would tempt them to stop elsewhere.
