Mr. Cooper, 56, was recently appointed to the position by Chief Circuit Court Judge W.S. Robertson.
As chief magistrate, Mr. Cooper is responsible for the supervision of all magistrates in the 20th Judicial Circui^. which includes Rappahannock with two magistrates, Fauquier County with four and Loudoun County with four.
He is also responsible for the. initial training of magistrates, scheduling and budget preparation, and he occasionally, acts as an intermediary between other magistrates and judges.
Chief magistrates are usually appointed to four-year terms, but Mr. Cooper’s initial term, which began Jan. 1, will last two years to complete the term of retired chief magistrate Frances W. Eldred.
Mrs. Eldred, who was chief magistrate for the 20th Judicial Circuit for the past 10 years, resigned the position effective Nov. 30 to work full-'
