Most forms of homeopathic medicine can treat chronic problems such as back pain or skin problems, said Dr. Harman. The concept, she said, is to give a small dose of a compound which triggers the body to heal itself.

“The best medicine is whatever works and is the least invasive to the animal at that time,” said Dr. Harman, which can mean surgery in some cases.

She treats several dogs with homeopathy medicine and herbs, though she directs some patients to Dr. Scott Dove, another vet who lives in Rappahannock, but has an office in Gainesville.

Hip dysplasia is a common problem with large or older dogs, and Dr. Harman treats that successfully with a series of acupuncture. “It is really rewarding,” she said.

Another service which Dr. Harman offers is computerized saddle fitting. It measures the pressures underneath the saddle while on the horse’s back, she said.
