Mrs. Eldred had; been appointed to the full-time job of chief magistrate by former Chief Circuit-Court Judge Carleton Penn. Prior to that she served as' a magistrate in Rappahannock County starting in 1976.
Mr. Cooper lives in Warrenton.
“I’m just getting my feet wet,” he said, noting that his responsibilities as chief magistrate are quite different from his previous responsibilities.in law enforcement. “There’s quite a bit to get used to.”
The law enforcement community reacted positively to Mr. Cooper’s appointment.
“Having been in law enforcement for so many years he’ll have firsthand knowledge of the problems the officers have to face on the street,” said new Loudoun County Sheriff Steve Simpson. “Those years of experience will benefit him greatly in his role as chief magistrate.”
Mr. Cooper noted that his responsibilities are to the citizens of the district as well as law enforcement.
