21 year-old horse owned by Val Higginson of Chester Gap. Nimrod had been having difficulty with arthritis in his back legs, and with the help of acupuncture and an herbal supplement to his food called Limber Horse, it is evident to his owner, his vet, and his farrier, that he is doing much better.
After first loosening up^Nimrod’s spinal cord by doing network chiropractic, which is a very light touch on different points on his back, Nimrod’s eyes began to close slightly, and he appeared to be very relaxed.
Dr. Harman inserted six acupuncture needles into Nimrod’s back area and injected each with a shot of vitamin B-12, which stimulates the acupuncture point. Nimrod relaxed one of his back legs immediately when one of the needles was inserted. She said that about 80 percent of the horses she treats like the needles.
Dr. Harman explained that paths of energy run through the body like an electrical system and that there are acupuncture points through the pathways where there are nerve endings and cells at one point.
She said it is like a dimmer switch, and when the acupuncture needle is inserted, it opens that pathway of energy (like turning the dimmer switch on to brighten the light). She said the flow of energy can actually be measured with an ohmmeter.
After inserting the needles. Dr. Harman stretched the horse’s legs, one by one, and moved them in circles to limber them up. Nimrod was visibly very relaxed and calm.
The final part of his treatment (and the most fun) was doing “carrot stretches,” where Dr. Harman would hold a carrot while standing by his back end and Nimrod would twist around to the side to get the carrot. This was repeated on the other side, and also in the front, where Dr. Harman would hold the carrot near the ground and Nimrod would bend his head down in order to reach it.
