Sixth grader Matt Ralston won the spelling bee for fourth through sixth graders at RCES on Feb. 20.
By correctly spelling “nostril,” he edged out second place winner and seventh grader Amanda Sims when she incorrectly spelled “bargain.” Kevin Yowell, another sixth grader, came in third.
Matt will represent the school at the regional spelling bee, which is sponsored by the Richmond Times Dispatch, in Richmond on March 31. As the winner of last week’s bee, he was presented with a beautiful new Webster’s dictionary by Wes Allison of the Richmond Times Dispatch.
Many of the words were tough, and “nostril” was the 110th word to be attempted in the bee. Some of the hardest words were monstrous, colossal, peninsula, kestrel, and mayoralty. “Blizzard” was one of the easier ones.
Other students participating in the spelling bee were Brittany Smith, Steven Clark, Allyson Dodson, Krystal Heflin, Kyle Robinson, Joshua Anderson, Tony Kelly, Alicia Jones, Lori Schwertfeger and Chris Payne.
