In semi-final action at Handley High School in Winchester Saturday night Central defeated Brentsville, and Manassas Park defeated Stonewall Jackson earning the second berth in regional competion.
In the finals Monday evening Central gained the victory, winning both the regular season title and the tournament championship.
“The kids gave a great effort,” Coach Eugene Baltimore said. “They played their hearts out. We know we should have won, but we didn’t make the plays at the end of the game and Brentsville did.
“Down the stretch free throw, shooting hurt us. If we’d made our free throws, we would have won no problem,” he added. “I’m really disappointed in the loss. We were expecting to win.”
But that statement reminded him of how far the team has come in one year. “There has been a different attitude this year. Last year we didn’t think we could win going into the tournament,” he said. “We’re now on an upswing from six wins last year to 12 wins this year, and I hope it can continue.”
Willie Eastham was named to the first team all district, and Jon Butler was named to the second team. Willie averaged 18 points and 18 rebounds per game. “He had an exceptional year,” Coach Baltimore said. “He totally improved his game from a year ago.”
Jon averaged 17 points per game. “He did an absolutely wonderful job for us this year,” Coach Baltimore said. “Everybody did a good job; it is not just one or two players who made us win 12 games. It was a whole team effort.”
