Scenic County
There is a lot of talk about Rappahannock being a special place with wonderful scenic vistas. There has even been a proposal to ask the General Assembly to designate Rappahannock a “scenic county.”
Has the time come to do something specific?
Madison County has applied for a $225,000 Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) grant to beautify the towns and villages along Route 231.
The funds will be used for plantings, new sighs, picnic areas, and sidewalks in the town of Madison and the villages of Rochelle, Pratts, Banco and Etlan.
Madison County’s Chamber of Commerce has a Scenic Byway Enhancement Committee specifically formed to make improvements to the scenic byway Route 231. t
The Rappahannock Garden Club has adopted the north end of Route 23.1 for frequent cleanup. It has also planted daffodils at the intersection of Route 231 -and U.S. 522. These efforts could use county support.
While there are no villages along Route 231 in Rappahannock County, there are places that might be suitable for picnic areas. There are certainly other areas that would be suitable for plantings.
Moreover the support in Madison County for such projects indicates there might be support there for banning through truck traffic. Why not pursue this?
And while that is going on, how about seeking scenic byway designation for U.S. 522 and U.S. 211 in the county?
Athletic Facilities
The School Board had hoped to put in a new hard surfaced track at the high school, but bids came in at over $80,000. Bond funds leftover from the elementary school addition are not sufficient to do this.
Now the board is exploring putting in parking lot lights and running a chase for field lighting under the track and soccer field so eventually they can be used at night.
Obviously the ^intention is to eventually use the field for football. But that is an expensive proposition.
With the school budget supporting only coaching stipends and transportation to away games, gate receipts are used up in paying for referees. The Athletic Boosters Club is hard pressed to keep the teams in uniforms.
Obviously significant volunteer contributions will be needed if the athletic facilities are ever to be improved.
