confusion and a lot of pain, said Ms. Bessmer.

In the schools, Ms. Bessmer works with the guidance counselors to help children both at school and at home. She tries to heavily involve parents and meets with them too. “They can and should be a part of the treatment,” she said, adding that parents should understand their kids so they can help them at home.

For the younger children, play therapy is often used rather than a direct approach. It takes some time, said Ms. Bessmer, but it is important to build up a relationship with the child. “It can take a long time for them to understand what is bothering them,” she explained.

The play therapy can involve puppets or drawing, a way in which they can deal with problems in a less threatening way than trying to talk about them directly, she said. As the children get older, they are more capable of talking and expressing their feelings more directly.

She is trained also to do psychological evaluations on children, such as personality inventory, intellectual assessments, and other questionnaires that help her understand the child’s feelings.

Ms. Bessmer said she feels that people in Rappahannock are very enlightened and don’t hesitate to come into the office and talk about their problems. She lives in Prince William County and said she really enjoys working with people here in Rappahannock County.
