The races are arranged for maximum variety. There is a special event for juniors (under 18), a race for youngsters'on their ponies. The weights the horses carry change for each race.
Today, crowds of 5,000 or more | come to watch the excitement. The custom is to bring a “tailgate” picnic. ; Spectators set up card tables covered 1 with food and drinK- In the friendly atmosphere even those who neglected the r larder are often invited to share.
The ,races are sponsored by ten ! Virginia fox hunt clubs. Experienced ! horsemen and women and beginners enjoy fox hunting, a tradition in Virginia since George Washington was young. Participants must have the skill and courage to follow the hounds* wherever they follow the fox’s scent, up or down hill, over fences and streams, and often at a gallop.
Some of the point-to-point jockeys are pure amateurs, members of* the hunts: business people, doctors, lawyers, farmers and working folks. But they also include expert risers and, well-known horses, some of Olympic caliber.
The Rappahannpck Hunt Pointto-Point Races are run over rolling/ country nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the most unspoiled, spectacular scenery in the Virginia Hunt country.
Dress warmly, pack yourfavorite picnic food and drink, loadfamily and friends in the car and come to Sperryville. General park-, ing is $5 per car. Admission is $5, per person.
