The Rappahannock Panthers varsity basketball team was eliminated in the first round of the Bull Run District Tournament, but not before providing their fans with a lot of exciting basketball at the Clarke County gym in Berryville Friday night.
Although the Panthers were, tied with Brentsville in fourth place at the'end of the regular season, they wept into the game ranked fifth, pla^ipig Brentsville, ranked fourth. In thpir previous meetings the teams had each won one game at home. The Panther squad felt confident it couid win the decisive third match, but the Brentsville Tigers fought back and carried the day 82 to 81 in overtime.
, Brentsville jumped out to a 6 to 0 lead, but Rapp stormed back tying the scqre. The score was tied again at 8 points each and again at 12 points each. Then the Panthers, led by Willie Eastham and Jon Butler, took the lead for most of the game. The first quarter ended with Rappahannock ahead 21 ; to 16.
Brentsville did not give up and closed to two points down early in the second, quarter, but the Rappahannock team held them off and went into half time, ajieqd 41 to 28.
Again Brentsville came back in the third quarter, and this time the Rappahannock squad was less successful in shutting the door. The third quartet ended with the Panthers up 59 to 52. i
Free throw shooting became crucial in the fourth quarter, and Brentsville had more success at the charity stripe. With 1:42 to go Rappahannock led 74 to 70, and with \ 42 seconds the Panthers were still j ahead 76 to 72, but Brentsville tied | the score 76 to 76 with 13 seconds left. A screaming contest between fans on opposite sides of the gym did not alter the score and regulation time ended with the teams still tied at 76.
Jason Carter got the first basket in the four minute overtime, but 1 Brentsville tied the score again. The / Panthers stalled for time and eventually got another chance at the foul line, but missed both shots. However, Jon Butler got another Panther bucket on a steal.
More missed free throws and Tiger shooting success gave Brentsville the lead for the first time since the first quarter with 22 seconds left, and that score held up to the end of the game.
, In , the other game at Clarke County, Central defeated Strasburg. Upsets were brewing at Page County High School where the other two quarter-final games were being played. Manassas Park defeated Clarke County and Stonewall Jackson knbck^d off George Mason.
