me cuuur s suggestion 10 oan truck traffic on Route 231 sounds great, but it may be to the detriment of those living South of Sperryville on U.S. 522. Residents along U.S. 522 South of Sperryville get truck traffic currently going to Culpeper and could then get traffic going to Madison as well.
As the editor points out, Route 229 is a logical way to get to Culpeper from Front Royal or Winchester; VDOT isn’t studying this however. Instead of a Sperryville connector study, VDOT should be looking at ways to decrease traffic going through the center of our county. Why isn’t VDOT studying changing the sign at Massies Comer? When leaving Flint Hill heading to Massies Comer there is a VDOT sign which directs traffic to Culpeper right towards Sperryville down U.S. 522. Why not change or add an arrow left so through traffic would use Route 229? It is shorter to Culpeper via 229 anyway. Route 229 is wider, has shoulders, and medians in areas. The fact of the matter is that we do carry a great deal of through truck traffic down U.S. 522 and we need to eliminate this problem, not participate in a study that fosters it.
By refusing to participate in this connector study we will prevent Sperryville from being mined, and we will encourage VDOT to look at alternatives (like the use of Rt. 229) which will provide the best solutions for our county and its citizens.
