“Nine Cityscapes: A Meditation on Piranesi’s Imaginary Prisons,” an exhibition of etchings by Thomas B. Spande will be the Middle Street Gallery’s show for the month of March.
While an undergraduate at Bowdoin College, Mr. Spande was awarded a grant from the Mellon Foundation to create this series of nocturnal cityscapes inspired by the “Carceri” prints of Piranesi. The resulting large-scale zinc plate etchings were first displayed at the Walker Art Museum in 1993. These city landscapes are composites of scenes from New York City and Boston and were based upon photographs taken by Mr. Spande.
Mr. Spande has received several national art awards for students, including a gold medal in the National Scholastic Art Competition. His work has been
