gardener, and for her longevity. Mattie Ball, the oldest descendant of Martha Washington at the time of her death, was bom in 1888 and passed on in 1996 at the age of 107. She married Judge Fletcher in 1914, and was the mother of Jim Bill Fletcher. Mattie Ball Fletcher became a renowned cook and gardener in her later years, gaining a reputation for her Sally Lunn bread, the candied grapefruit peel that was served at The Inn at Little Washington, and for her pickles, hush puppies, and for a sausage dish that was featured in Gourmet magazine.
