Front page news: James W. Fletcher was named Citizen of the Year. In short the article stated: a lifetime spent quietly helping others. Mr. Fletcher graduated from law school at the University of Richmond in 1939, when he was only 20 years old. He passed the bar exam, but since the age of majority was then 21, he had to wait until his 21st birthday that October to begin his practice. For some years, he was one of only two practicing attorneys in Rappahannock County. Aside from his legal practice and political interest, Mr. Fletcher also still runs the cattle business at his Thornton Hill Farm outside Sperryville. Social Services Director Beverly Bowen and Caseworker Marie Davis sorted food recently for the 55 Christmas baskets assembled by the department. Thanks to the community’s generosity, Mrs. Davis said, the number of baskets was increased by 15 from last year’s donations.
