ees will be working throughout the Y2K weekend to test computer systems before the beginning of the first business day of the new millennium on Jan. 3, 2000. Our local offices will also be able to issue emergency payments to beneficiaries in cases of dire need as called for by existing procedures.
The contingency plans also address the delivery of payments. Since Jan. 1, 2000 is a holiday, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments will be delivered on Dec. 30, 1999, instead of the normal first day of the month delivery date. Therefore, there should not be any Y2K problem with the January 2000 SSI payment. Social Security benefits are paid on one of four payment dates. The payments for January will begin to be paid on Jan. 3, 2000. The post office will receive checks a day earlier than normally scheduled to ensure timely delivery on Jan. 3.
Our contingency plans are completed, and if small or localized problems do occur in January 2000, we will resolve them. The American public wouldn’t want it otherwise. The century will change, but our dependability won’t.
