On Dec. 9, a magistrate in Charlottesville ruled for the defendant, Rappahannock County, in Lisa Reid’s sexual discrimination suit. Reid felt she had been unfairly discriminated against when she was not given an interview for the animal warden’s position she applied for in 1997.
In 1995, Reid applied for the position of animal warden. She had been working at the animal shelter with the Rappahannock Animal Welfare League (RAWL) since 1990. Reid acted as secretary of RAWL for a year, and served as president for five years.
She was interviewed by the Board of Supervisors for the animal warden’s position. Reid says afterwards, she was told by John McCarthy, county administrator, that James Leake would be given the job, but that she was their second choice; however, the county denies Reid was the second choice or was ever told this.
In February 1997, when Leake decided to work for the Sheriff’s Office, the animal warden position became available. Reid applied again. This time around, Reid was not considered for an interview and Carl Menefee was given the job.
Reid says, “Number one, you tell me I’m your second choice in 1995. Number two, now you’re saying you interviewed your top six. Well, they must have had some absolutely incredible qualifications. They interviewed one woman and five guys. They publicly printed that they interviewed the top six.”
The county’s view is different.
