As we count down the days to the new millennium, Social Security Commissioner Kenneth S. Apfel recently stated, “I can assure all Americans that when the new millennium arrives on Jan. 1, 2000, Social Security benefits will continue to be paid on time and in the right amount, just as they have over the past 65 years. The reason I can make such assurances is that we recognized a potential problem early on, and fixed it.”
