The process of selecting Rappahannock News
‘Citizen of the Century’ was a formidable, yet
welcome, task. The selection process required a careful review of the recommendations made to us, of the good works of Rappahannock folk, and of the people who have shaped our very existence here.
The process resulted in two conclusions: one, that the Fletcher family undoubtedly deserved ‘Citizen of the Century’ honors; and two, that we in Rappahannock County are fortunate in having amongst us so many others worthy of celebration.
It is unlikely that the ‘great people’ per capita ratio in Rappahannock County is surpassed in any other place in the world.
We are flush with caring and hardworking people in all occupations - there is Judge Rayner Snead, farmers John Marshall Clark, Willie Wood, Newbill Miller, Louis Moore, Tom Lee, Ned Johnson, D. Lyle Miller, James F. Massie and many others; educators Mary Quaintance, H.B. Winfrey, Elsie Dodson, Mary Jenkins, Dorothy Butler, Jessie Miller Turner, Christine Johnson, Louise Price, Lavina Barron and many others.
Recognition should go to the county’s first public health nurse, Mrs. Frances Thornton, to Dr. Brown of Washington, Dr. Brown of Woodville, Dr. Smith and Dr. J.P. Snead of Sperryville.
And the list could go on.
As Bill Fletcher said, “we’ve been blessed.”
