am doing just tnat — with some changes. The difference is that the wishes are for the year 2000.
My calendar informs me that today — Dec. 22, the day this column is being written —is the first day of winter. The year has turned. Sunrise will be a fragment of time earlier and sunset only a second or two later. It is to celebrate more light in the world that I write of my wishes for the new year.
May Carolina wrens greet each new day for you as they do for me. At sunrise, a pair appears outside my study window. For a time, they communicate with gentle churring notes. Shortly after, I hear the loud, emphatic song of the male: “Sec-ret, sec-ret!”
