Bell Atlantic offers people some suggestions for the transition:
• Do not automatically assume that a particular trouble is Y2K related. For example, in periods of high call volume, you may occasionally experience delayed dial tone. While we do not expect network congestion, if everyone picks up the phone around midnight of Dec. 31, whether to test dial tone or to send good wishes, there is an increased potential for delayed dial tone which has nothing to do with year 2000 failures.
• You should continue to call in troubles using the process you follow today. Although the transition period occurs on a weekend, we plan to have extra staff on hand in the customer services and repair centers to respond to your calls and for dispatching technicians where necessary.
• Emergency service numbers like 911 must be kept available for real emergencies, so do not make test calls to see if they are operational.
