The Rappahannock News contacted area banks, schools, power and telephone companies to find out what preparations are being made for the leap into the new year.
Mike Leake, CEO of the Rappahannock National Bank, says that the bank has been preparing for three years to ensure a smooth transition. All the mission critical systems have been tested repeatedly and they are all Y2K compliant. The bank is heavily regulated by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. And the OCC has given the bank a satisfactory rating on their readiness for Y2K.
Sheriff’s department
Sheriff Larry Sherertz confirms that all the computers at the Sheriff’s department have been checked for Y2K compliance. All of the computers have Windows ‘98 installed.
In terms of staff for Dec. 31, all employees will either be working or on call, including jail, patrol and dispatch personnel.
Sherertz says, “We will be checking on parties, making sure that the people that are going to these parties are not getting back on the highway in an intoxicated state. We recommend that there be a designated driver for any group that is going outside the home to celebrate and that person should remain sober.”
