Trainer and sister-in-law Sara Hogan agreed with van der Woude’s assessment. “I got this horse from (trainer) Tbm Voss two years ago,” she explained. “I meant to ride him in the ladies’ timber division. Things changed, though, and Matt started hunting the horse and really gets along with him.
“Lone Mountain is a cool professional — he’s got a wonderful disposition,” Hogan went on. “He runs in a loose ring snaffle. No tongue, tie, no figure eight. Matt can ask him (to jump) from any spot, long or short. They just get along.”
Hogan added that the Rappahannock races are sort of special for her family: sister Daphrie, Matt’s wife, won her first steeplechase race, the foxhunters’ timber, at Rappahannock’s old Thornton Hill course in 1984. Hogan, too, won her first steeplechase at Thornton Hill, the ladies’ timber in 1989. “And now Matt,” she said.
Van der Woude acts as honorary whipper-in for the Warrenton Hunt, occasionally filling in as huntsman for professional Jim Atkins.
