William Jennings Bryan
After church we all piled into the jeep and with anxious anticipation headed to the sites. I had called the evening before to ask permission of Mrs. Havstad about going to the cemetery and old house. I had also called Sally Keyser that I’d be around to see her after I’d finished with the tour.
Jerry took many photos of the old house and some of the cemetery. I pointed out that as the crow would fly distance to the old Pullen place on the ridge. Yet, the road up would prove to be a little further. We felt the luck of the Irish was certainly in the matter all this afternoon.
Arriving at the cemeteiy at the Pullen place on the mountain, a heretofore story was made real with proof to Jerry and Carol that their host had indeed been telling them the truth, as before them stood that stone monument with the simple word Lillard inscribed on it.
After leaving the mountain and coming back down into Swindler Hollow we made our way over into Old Hollow. Passing the old Gaunt place, the Atkins’, the old McCleary place, and finally to Daniel and Sally Keyser’s.
I had not informed them of bringing any other guests by, but I think Sally reads my mind. We entered the house finding our hosts had already prepared a grand luncheon. They do know how to show good old fashioned Southern hospitality.
