On Feb. 1, William Sharp and I journeyed
to New Zealand to attend a meeting of the International Dwarf Fruit Tree Association held at Napier in the center of apple and grape growing country.
The population is some three to four million, ten percent of whom are native Maoris who have maintained their culture to a large degree.
The climate is sub-tropical in the North Island and temperate in South Island, indeed much like Mexico City.
The industries are tourism, fruit growing, sheep (many sheep), coal and oil as well as fisheries.
About 40 percent of the people are in agriculture.
