This same William Jennings Bryan’s roots were embedded deeply in Rappahannock County’s history. W.J. Bryan’s father, Silas Lillard Bryan, was born in 1822 in Culpeper, now Rappahannock, the seventh child of John and Nancy Lillard Bryan.
When a youth, the Bryan family moved to Point Pleasant, W.Va. Here Nancy Bryan died about 1832 and John Bryan died about two years later. Silas was then about 12 years of age and was looked after by aunts and uncles until he went to Troy, Mo. to live with his brother. Silas attended McKendree College in Lebanon, 111. and when he began to read law he moved to Salem, Marion County, 111.
