After we introduced ourselves and a few words passed between us you could just see the excitement brightening those two faces. It was late however, and I promised this couple that after church on the morrow I would take time to show them what they were seeking.
Jerry and Carol attended services the next morning. This was the first time to my knowledge that a Bryan had been in attendance at our church since about 1818.
William Jennings Bryan did come to Rappahannock on several occasions. Once he visited his cousin, P.H. O’Bannon in Sperryville and as I understand it, delivered a speech to a crowd gathered there. He also had donated two pulpit chairs to Thornton Gap Church.
He had erected two stone monuments, one in memory of his Bryan ancestors and the other in memory of his Lillard ancestors. The Bryan monument was dismantled many years ago and there is hardly a trace of the cemetery, however, the Lillard monument is still to be seen today at the old Pullen place on Pickeral Ridge.
