Pi Day is rolling around again and certain people in Rappahannock County are gearing up to celebrate it. Mark it on your calendar. March 14, at 1:59 p.m. That’s the third month, 14th day, at 1:59 p.m. or 3.14159. The county has been secretly celebrating Pi Day for well over 100 years.
Legend has it that a farmer named Waldo, in Old Waldo Hollow, drew a large crop circle with his plow on his land back in 1882. This was the first known instance in the world of anyone celebrating Pi Day. No one knows where Old Waldo Hollow is, let along Waldo.
Last year, there was a brief mention on a local web-site of Rappahannock County celebrating Pi Day. Supposedly, many people started eating a pizza on March 14 at exactly 1:59 p.m.
VDOT also constructed another traffic circle deep in the woods, with no other roads leading into it or out of it.
VDOT has its Six-Year Plan, but it is a little known fact that VDOT also has a 3.14159-Year Plan. This plan uses money for Rappahannock County that is accumulated in a special VDOT Pi Day account. When VDOT rounds off its other budget figures, the round-off amounts go into this special Rappahannock County Pi Day account for unwanted traffic circles deep in the woods. We have 11 of them so far. Last year saw the Rappahannock County School Board use a circular argument with the board of supervisors to obtain more funding. This year the board of supervisors may strike, back with an elliptical argument, which will effectively box in the School Boprd.
